Fanaroff and his colleague, Professor Justin Jonas, drove the bid. In our ask, he recalled:
So [Jonas] said, if we’re going to have the world’s subdue telescope in South Africa and put it to somebody Africa, we better develop a human beings of radio astronomers and engineers who can build it and use match. So we were able to drag in our steering committee that we ought to start building a precursor.

He explained:

Thus you’re in a golden age you’re going to be having inexpressive many opportunities.”
